9/29/17 - This week in math, we reviewed reducing fractions to simplest form and finding equivalent fractions.  Both are concepts that were taught in fourth grade.  Many students are struggling with these concepts because they are unsure of their multiplication facts.  Please practice multiplication facts at home with your child.  We also learned how to convert improper fractions and mixed numbers and how to add fractions with unlike denominators.  On Monday, we will review these concepts.

Next week, we will also learn to add and subtract numbers using a number line and adding and subtracting mixed numbers.

In social studies, we are reading about different countries coming to settle the Americas and their reasons for doing so.  This had led to many great classroom discussions.

Thank you for scheduling parent conferences.  I will be sending reminder emails to confirm the date and time.  Don't forget, students have no school on Monday 10/9 and Tuesday 10/10.

9/22/17 - Thank you for responding to the Excellence Fund.  We reached 100% participation and the students are thrilled!  Later this semester, they will get to enjoy a Fun Friday activity.

Almost everyone has signed up for a teacher conference.  There are still a few slots available if you have yet to sign up.  Please complete the pre-conference form soon so that I can have your input as I prepare for conferences.

Today in e-slot, our class made their selections for upcoming clusters.  Clusters start the first week of October.

In social studies news, it seems that our social studies textbook is now available in an eText version online.  This could be great news, because if your child can access it online at home and find it user friendly, they may not need to carry the heavy book back and forth to school.  I am unable to login to see what it looks like from a student perspective so I am unsure of how user friendly it is.  You can find information HERE about logging in.  If your student does use it, please let me know how well (or not well) it works.

Today in math, I returned the math test we took earlier this week.  All students have the opportunity to do test corrections to earn up to half of the points back that they missed.  Test corrections are required of students who scored less than a 70.  Test corrections must be completed on my TEST CORRECTION FORM and all parts of the form must be complete, including a parent signature to earn points back.  Students were given a test correction form today in class if they chose to do corrections.  If they chose not to do corrections, their test will go home next week in the Monday folder.  Test corrections are due no later than Thursday, September 28.

9/15/17 - Thank you to those parents who helped chaperone the YMCA field trip.  It was so much fun!  I uploaded photos into Seesaw yesterday, so be sure to check out pics of your child.  You just might see them at the top of the rock wall, shooting a bow and arrow, or flying through the sky on the giant swing!  It was exciting to see the kids working together and cheering each other on as they confronted various challenges.  So many of your children were afraid to try the climbing walls or giant swing but were so glad they did it afterwards.

Fall parent conferences will be held in early October.  Be on the lookout next week for an email with the sign up information.

A couple of important housekeeping items from the office...

  • 2017-18 Student Pick-up Authorization Form - Please Complete for All Students at LME  It is time to to collect pick-up authorization information for our students via an online form to ensure we have this information readily available, particularly if/when we need to implement our parent/student reunification plan due to an emergency. Anyone who you might possibly ask to pick-up your child for any reason (siblings, neighbors, relatives, co-workers. etc.) should be listed on this form. Anyone not listed on the online form or student registration form will not be permitted to pick up your child for any reason. We ask that one parent from each household complete this form as soon as possible.  Click HERE to access the Student Pick-up Authorization Form.

  • Excellence Fund Campaign - Our Excellence Fund Campaign ends next Friday, September 22nd and our class would love to win a FUN FRIDAY but we need your help! In order to qualify for a Fun Friday we need all of our parents to participate in the Excellence Fund Campaign. Even if you cannot make a donation at this time, we still need each family to complete the online support form in order for our class to be eligible for the participation awards. I encourage all of our families who have not yet participated to CLICK HERE and complete our online support form

Looking ahead....

In math next week, we will do a test review on Monday and test on Tuesday.  This test will cover all of Unit 1 which includes prime and composite numbers, multiples and factors, and order of operations.  I will load extra practice sheets on to the assignments page for those students who would like some extra practice.  Our next unit will begin with addition and subtraction of fractions with like and unlike denominators and mixed numbers and introduce perimeter.

In social studies, we will begin studying the colonization of America.

9/8/17 - Tuesday is our field trip to the YMCA Twin Lakes.  Please have your child bring:  sack lunch, water bottle, drawstring bag to hold their belongings (optional), hat/sunscreen (optional).  We are out in the sun most of the day.  This is a great opportunity for your child to step outside their comfort zone and try all the activities the YMCA is providing (rock wall, giant chair swing, team builder activities, and archery).  Students are not required, but are highly encouraged, to participate in all activities.  Parents are welcome to come join us. Please remember to have a background check through the RRISD website.

So many of you have signed up for Seesaw and are checking out what your child is up to during their school day.  If you have not yet signed up and need another copy of your sign-in information, let me know.

In math, we quizzed over multiples, factors, prime and composite this week and started our study of the order of operations.  We will continue this through next week and test early the following week.   After order of operations, we move on to addition and subtraction of fractions with like and unlike denominators and mixed numbers.

In social studies, we painted our physical maps today.  There will be a map skills test on Friday, September 15.

9/1/17 - It was great to see so many parents at Parent Night last night.  I hope that you found the information useful.  If you have yet to pay the class fee, please send in $35 (exact cash or check with driver's license #) with your child as soon as possible.

I will be sending home invitation to Seesaw in the Monday folder on Tuesday if you did not pick up the family invitation last night.

Here is a copy of our slide show presentation for those who were unable to attend.  Let me know if you have any questions.

5th Grade Team 6-1 Parent Night Presentation

This week in my math class, we reviewed multiples and factors in our notes and through several games.  We also learned about  prime and composite numbers.  We will practice prime and composite numbers next week and have a quiz over multiples, factors, prime and composite numbers mid-week.  We will then move on to order of operations.

In social studies, we continued working on our physical maps of the US.
