4/20/18 - Here are some important announcements:

LBJ Library Field Trip - On Wednesday, May 2, we will be visiting the LBJ Library on the UT campus.  At the library, students will be separated into small groups that will be led by a docent through the exhibits.  I need at least 3 parents chaperones to join the small groups.  The cost of entry for parents is $5 and you would need to meet us there.  For this trip, we will not have space on the bus.  Please let me know if you would like to join us.  I can collect the $5 from you that day or you can send it in with your child before then.

Pink permission slips for the field trip will be sent home in the Monday folder on April 23.  Please complete the form and return to me as soon as possible.

Immigration Day - Immigration Day is Tuesday, April 24.  Thank you to those who have signed up to volunteer.  Your child will receive a couple of social studies grades that day.  One will be a participation grade and the other is a "Citizenship Test" grade.  The participation grade includes your child having all parts of their paperwork completed that morning (with fake money), dressing the part (full costumes are not required, but sport shorts and hoodies are not ok; plain clothes are ok), and appropriate behavior throughout the events of the day.  Your child can change after the Ellis Island experience.  The "Citizenship Test" will count as a test grade.  Students have received a study guide and a Quizlet to help them study is also available on my website under Social Studies Assignments.

5th Grade Recognition Ceremony - Invitations are being sent home in Monday folders on April 23.

In my math class this week, we took the last of our math "tests."  From now on, most of what we will do in math will be project-based.  Tests will be graded and given back to students for the opportunity to make corrections later next week.  On Monday, students will be working on an Earth Day math activity, and on Wednesday, we will begin a math project called Run a Taco Truck in which students design and build a taco truck business.

4/13/18 - STAAR testing is done for now.  The next STAAR test for all 5th graders will be Science on May 16.

Next week on Tuesday, we will be having an Explore E2 Day on campus.  The cafeteria will only serve sack lunches that day as we will be eating outdoors.  Please plan accordingly.

Pride Night is Friday, April 20.  Please consider purchasing tickets for the 5th Grade Teacher Treasure.  Three winners from each homeroom will complete puzzles and challenges Amazing Race-style leading them to a final scrumptious prize!

In math next week, we will briefly review concepts recently covered:  geometry, coordinate planes, measurement conversions, and financial literacy.  We will test over these concepts on Thursday and Friday.

In social studies, we will prepare for Immigration Day and continue our study of the building of America after the American Revolution.

4/7/2018 - April! Can you believe we are in the home stretch of your child's 5th grade year?!

IMPORTANT - STAAR testing is April 10 and April 11.  LME will be a CLOSED CAMPUS, meaning no visitors are allowed on campus.  Please plan accordingly.

Since spring break in my math classes, we have wrapped up our unit on measurement conversions and financial literacy.  The students really enjoyed the financial literacy unit, learning about income, taxes, expenses, and budgets.  They really enjoyed hearing some of my own stories about the financial mistakes and poor decisions I made in younger years!  After the STAAR testing next week, we will complete a final wrap up of measurement conversions and financial literacy with a unit test the following week.

For the remainder of the school year, much of what we do in math will be project-based activities.  My classes and I will also be participating in a pilot program testing a couple of online mathematics programs that may be incorporated at the campus level in the future.

In social studies, we are learning about the struggles our country faced after the American Revolution.  The students will also be introduced to the Immigration Day project with Mr. Holmstrom in Language Arts.  Immigration Day is April 25.  You should have received an information packet in the Monday folder last week.  We need many volunteers!
